What is it?
Crystal deodorant is a naturally occurring crystal of pure ammonium alum. Used and prized for centuries as a water purifier because of it’s antibacterial properties, alum production was closely controlled by the Catholic Church. Taxes on alum production were levied directly by the Vatican – another reason Henry VIII was so keen to break away from the Pope. More recently, Victorian ladies would buy alum salt from the chemist and dab a solution of it into their armpits to keep them smelling fresh. Gentlemen would also purchase small ammonium alum crystals to use on shaving cuts, where its astringent and anti-bacterial properties would ensure a rapid uninfected repair.
How does it work?
Perspiration is an essential part of the body’s cooling system, we each secrete about 2 pints of sweat from around 2 million glands on our bodies, even on a cool day. Mostly this is odourless, colourless and completely harmless, it is the bacteria which collects in the creases of our skin, armpits, groin, under breasts – which breaks down the sweat and within about 6 hours, that creates the familiar odour we know as B.O. (Body Odor). By applying a thin film of anti-bacterial ammonium alum salt from the alum crystal to the affected areas, the bacteria cannot do its worst and no odour is produced.
Does it REALLY work?
Yes. After bathing, simply dampen the crystal and apply a thin film under the arms, around the groin, under breasts, wherever you would normally apply a deodorant – it’s even helps prevent smelly feet too. One application should be enough to last the whole day.
